true love

  “What’s the matter, honey?”

            “He doesn’t like me!”

            “It’s all right.”

            “No, it’s not all right.”

            “Sure it is.”

“What do you mean, sure it is? How can it be all right? The only guy I’ve ever cared about, the only person I’ve ever opened myself to, the only person that really means anything to me—he doesn’t care. He doesn’t like me. And none of it matters.”

            “Well, I think it matters.”

            “What matters?”

“I think it matters that you care, because not enough people do. I think it matters that you were willing to open your heart to someone, because that’s also hard to do. And I think it matters that you’re learning how to value others in your life.”

“Well, how does that help me?”

“It helps you because, one day, a pretty great guy is going to come calling, and he’s going to care about you, he’s going to open himself to you, and you’re going to mean more than the entire world to him—and, can I tell you something, if you thought what you felt for this one boy was pretty special, I can tell you it’s even more special when the both of you feel the same way.”
